You will find our museum 'a seed bank of ideas' examples of human ingenuity from the past. Many objects, ideas and traditional techniques have relevance for today. Many of the old ways showed us how to live today. Did you ever wonder how a particular thing got started?

The collection includes some very special pieces such as the Rainer piano, a Mudge and Yarwood Organ manufactured in Whitby and a Rosewood Parlour Suite reputed to have been specially purchased by John Ham Perry (son of Whitby founder, Peter Perry) in order to properly entertain the Prince of Wales on his visit to Whitby in 1859.

You can visit the museum and find out all kinds of interesting things that people in the olden days used in their daily lives.
The Museum and Children's Centre displays are arranged in attractive room settings with an open concept arrangement. Some areas are hands on while others we prefer you look only. Please ask the volunteer tour guide.
We have many visitors from all over the world as well as residents of Whitby and places throughout Southern Ontario. Children find the museum an exciting place where they can learn about activities and tools used in yesteryear. Children's activities are planned on a regular basis allowing children to participate in old fashioned activities. New activities are constantly being planned for all ages, as well as the young at heart, who seem to always have an open mind for learning.
Workshops on Heritage Arts & Crafts, such as knitting, rug hooking, quilting and embroidery, candle making, butter making, baking etc. are held periodically.
We also provide workshops for those with special needs to come to the museum for outings, learning and enjoyment.
Seniors teas at various times of the year are also popular as are the youth learning activities.
Many artifacts are from Whitby itself and others from a wider surrounding area. The History of Whitby is a microcosm of the development which occurred in Southern Ontario, from the Aboriginal inhabitants and European settlers to the present day. Those interested in history as a whole in Southern Ontario, or as a study in a larger perspective will find some of the areas quite enlightening. Even artifacts and people from Whitby have had farther reaching effects that have shaped our world.

Whitby History Museum is very appreciative of the support we have from the community at large, our many industrious volunteers, and corporate community support.
Whitby History Museum is running out of room for all that we do, our artifacts need a larger space. You can help fundraise for the New Museum Complex.
We welcome all donations large and small.

The Museum also contains a small information centre with brochures and cards from the Whitby, Durham and the surrounding area.
Since the Whitby Information Centre was closed, we often get visitors to Whitby stopping by to ask about things to do and see.
We've been happy to hear the compliments visitors make to the museum. Most are impressed with how warm and friendly it is, and love the homey, hands on feel.
